Thurston Lava Tube
Walk through a lava tube in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park — a naturally lit basalt tunnel carved by ancient volcanic flows beneath a lush rainforest.
About this spectacle
Step inside a collapsed lava tunnel and walk through a cathedral of volcanic rock formed thousands of years ago by flowing basalt. The Thurston Lava Tube in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park invites visitors into a dimly lit passage where the walls glisten with moisture and lava formations line the ceiling and floor. The air is cool and damp, carrying a faint mineral scent. Ferns and native ʻōhiʻa lehua trees frame the entrance, creating a dramatic transition from jungle to underground darkness. Inside, the tube stretches for several hundred feet, lit in the main section to guide walkers past rippled lava walls and ancient flow lines. The experience is visceral and geological — a rare chance to stand inside the plumbing of a shield volcano and feel the scale of eruption forces that once coursed through this very channel.
