Peak season Thresher Shark Cleaning Station — Malapascua Philippines
The seamount of Monad Shoal off Malapascua Island in the Philippines' Visayan Sea is the world's only known reliable cleaning station for pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) — the sharks ascending from deep water each dawn to be cleaned by parasitic isopods and wrasse at the 25-metre seamount crest. The daily attendance (most mornings, 5am–7am) at this single site has made Malapascua the world's most celebrated thresher shark diving destination, and the experience of descending to the seamount in pre-dawn darkness and waiting as the first pale light filters through the water while a 3-metre thresher shark appears from the deep blue, circles, and holds position for cleaning provides one of the Indo-Pacific's most anticipated wildlife encounters. The thresher's enormous scythe tail — which it uses as a whip to stun prey — is fully displayed at the cleaning station.
About this spectacle
Before first light, divers descend to the crest of Monad Shoal — a seamount rising to around 25 metres below the surface in the Visayan Sea — and wait in the dark, blue-tinged water. As dawn filters down, pelagic thresher sharks emerge from the deep, their silhouettes materialising from the gloom: animals up to 3 metres long, their extraordinary scythe-shaped tails — used to whip and stun prey in the open ocean — trailing behind them with unmistakable elegance. The sharks slow to near-stillness at the cleaning station, allowing wrasse and parasitic isopods to service them, and remain visible for minutes at a time. The ambient sounds are those of bubbles and current; the visual drama is extraordinary — a genuinely pelagic open-ocean shark, motionless in ambient blue light, tail fully extended. No other site in the world offers this behaviour reliably, and on most mornings the sharks appear, making each dive feel both intimate and genuinely wild.
