Teufelstisch (Hinterweidenthal)
14 m mushroom-shaped sandstone formation in the Palatinate Forest.
About this spectacle
The Teufelstisch — 'Devil's Table' — is a striking sandstone monolith rising 14 metres from the forest floor of the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Millions of years of differential erosion have sculpted it into a remarkable mushroom shape: a broad, flat capstone balanced atop a narrower sandstone column. Visitors approach through fragrant pine and mixed woodland, arriving at a formation that appears almost architectural in its improbability. The red-orange hues of the sandstone shift with changing light through the day, and at close range the layered striations in the rock reveal the slow patience of geological time. Ferns and mosses colonise the base, softening the boundary between stone and forest floor. The site is accessible via marked hiking trails in the Palatinate Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it a rewarding half-day walk from Hinterweidenthal. The formation is particularly photogenic in low-angled morning or afternoon light, when shadows accentuate the mushroom cap's overhang.
