Teufelsschlucht Gorge — Südeifel

The Teufelsschlucht — Devil's Gorge — near Ernzen in the Südeifel Natural Park is a narrow sandstone slot canyon carved by millennia of stream erosion through vivid red Buntsandstein rock, its walls closing to barely two metres at the tightest passages while the canopy of ancient oak and pine closes overhead to create a twilight world of deep red stone, fern, and moss. The canyon trail winds for several kilometres through the Irreler Wasserfälle — a series of small waterfalls descending through the sandstone gorge — making this one of the most visually varied short hikes in the German uplands. In autumn, the orange and gold of the deciduous canopy reflecting off the wet red sandstone walls creates colour combinations of startling intensity. The gorge is primeval and cool even on hot summer days, and the sound of water running through the narrow passages accompanies the entire walk. Easily combined with the nearby Ferschweiler Plateau and its prehistoric earthworks for a full-day geological and archaeological immersion.

About this spectacle

The Teufelsschlucht — Devil's Gorge — draws visitors into a narrow sandstone slot canyon near Ernzen in Rhineland-Palatinate, where walls of vivid red Buntsandstein rock close to barely two metres apart and the interlocking oak and pine canopy reduces daylight to a cool, green-tinged twilight. The trail winds through the gorge past the Irreler Wasserfälle, a sequence of small waterfalls that tumble over sandstone ledges, filling the passages with the constant sound of running water. Fern and moss cling to every damp surface, and the stone itself seems to glow with warmth against the dark green foliage. Autumn is the standout season, when orange and gold leaf colour reflects off the wet red walls in combinations of striking intensity, but the gorge offers genuine drama year-round — cool and primeval in summer heat, atmospheric in winter quiet. The trail covers several kilometres of varied terrain and can be extended to the adjacent Ferschweiler Plateau for a richer full-day excursion.
