Taejongdae Cliffs
Dramatic sea cliffs at Busan's southern tip where layered rock stacks plunge into the Korea Strait, offering sweeping coastal panoramas and crashing surf.
About this spectacle
Taejongdae is a dramatic coastal park at the southern tip of Yeongdo Island in Busan, South Korea, where sheer cliffs of layered rock plunge into the Korea Strait. Visitors walk forested paths that suddenly open onto vertiginous viewpoints, where waves crash against jagged sea stacks and rocky outcrops far below. The sound of surf and wind is constant, seabirds wheel overhead, and on clear days the distant silhouette of Japan's Tsushima Island is sometimes visible on the horizon. The interplay of dark basalt and sedimentary rock strata makes every ledge a study in geological time. A small lighthouse perches on the headland, adding a photogenic focal point to the raw coastal drama. The site is forested above and completely exposed at the cliff edge, creating a vivid contrast between sheltered woodland paths and open ocean vistas.
