About this spectacle

Taal Lake is a vast caldera lake in Batangas province, south of Manila, cradling the active Taal Volcano Island at its centre. Visitors crossing the lake by small outrigger boat are treated to an ever-shifting panorama: the crater island rising from glassy water, steam wisping from vents, and the surrounding rim of older calderas stretching to the horizon. The air carries a faint sulphuric tang closer to the island. The lagoon's inner shoreline — a lake within a lake, known as the Crater Lake — is a vivid, sometimes milky-turquoise pool set inside the active cone. Birdlife dotting the shallows and local fishing boats add human texture to a fundamentally volcanic tableau. Sunrise from the lake's edge turns the water copper and rose, silhouetting the volcano against a brightening sky in a scene that rewards photographers at any skill level.
