Sutherland Falls — Milford Sound New Zealand
Sutherland Falls, accessible from the Milford Track, is New Zealand's highest waterfall at 580 metres in three tiers — emerging from Lake Quill above the Clinton Valley and dropping in stages visible from the track's upper section through dense Fiordland podocarp forest. The falls flow year-round but reach maximum spectacle after the West Coast's frequent heavy rain events, when the volume increases dramatically and the spray fills the valley below. The Milford Track is New Zealand's most famous Great Walk, and the Sutherland Falls side trip on Day 4 adds a 3-kilometre return walk through undisturbed Fiordland beech and podocarp forest to the base of the falls where the spray creates a permanent micro-climate of ferns and mosses. The falls' height makes them one of the world's tallest — New Zealand's extreme rainfall and steep mountain terrain creating conditions for exceptional vertical drops throughout Fiordland.
About this spectacle
Standing at the base of Sutherland Falls is a full-body experience: 580 metres of cascading water descending in three distinct tiers from Lake Quill, driving a constant roar that reverberates off the enclosing valley walls. The spray is relentless, soaking visitors who venture close and sustaining a lush microclimate of dripping ferns and mosses at the falls' foot. The approach along the 3-kilometre return side trail from the Milford Track passes through undisturbed Fiordland beech and podocarp forest, its canopy filtering greenish light and dampening sound until the falls burst into view. After heavy rain — and Fiordland receives some of the highest rainfall in the world — the volume swells dramatically, the three tiers merging into a churning white curtain. Morning light catches the spray and can produce vivid rainbows at the base. The falls flow in all seasons, though peak visual drama follows rain events that are reliably frequent on this coast.
