Sumidero Canyon is one of Mexico's most dramatic natural features — a 1,000-metre-deep gorge on the Grijalva River whose sheer vertical walls rise directly from the water, passable only by boat through 35 kilometres of enclosed canyon whose scale is best understood when the tourist launches navigating it appear as specks against 900-metre cliffs. Sumidero Canyon carves a 1,000-metre-deep gash through the Chiapas highlands, and the only way to witness its full drama is from the deck of a motorised launch on the Grijalva River. As the boat enters the gorge, walls of bare rock rise so steeply and so high that the sky narrows to a ribbon far overhead, and the vessel shrinks to near-invisibility against cliffs that the short description places at around 900 metres. Water streaks down the rock face in thin cascades, and one entire wall section is draped in moss and mineral deposits arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree — an unmistakable, permanently green formation. Crocodiles bask along the muddy margins, spider monkeys move through the canopy where vegetation clings to ledges, and kingfishers and herons punctuate the shadows. Morning light catches the upper cliff edges and throws the canyon floor into cool shade, making the scale even harder to comprehend. The enclosed geometry of the gorge means sounds carry strangely, and the smell of damp rock and river water is constant throughout the 35-kilometre passage.
