Sternenpark Rhön (Wasserkuppe)
Certified dark-sky reserve on the Wasserkuppe; Milky Way and meteor showers.
About this spectacle
Perched atop the Wasserkuppe, the highest peak in the Rhön highlands, the Sternenpark Rhön is one of Germany's certified dark-sky reserves. On moonless nights, the Milky Way arches dramatically overhead, its core glowing with thousands of individual stars visible to the naked eye — a sight increasingly rare across central Europe. Meteor showers such as the Perseids and Leonids appear in startling clarity against the inky backdrop. The wide, open summit plateau offers nearly 360-degree horizons, letting observers track celestial objects from rise to set without obstruction. The air at altitude carries a crisp stillness, punctuated only by the occasional rustle of wind across the highland moorland. Autumn and winter nights offer the longest darkness and exceptional transparency, though summer showers draw dedicated crowds. Star-gazing events and guided astronomy nights are regularly held here, making this accessible even for casual visitors discovering the cosmos for the first time.
