About this spectacle

Sombrero Key Coral Reef lies within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary off Marathon, where visitors descend into a living underwater garden of brain corals, sea fans, and staghorn formations. Snorkelers and divers hover above colonies of reef fish — parrotfish grinding coral, angelfish drifting through sea fans, and the occasional hawksbill turtle gliding overhead. The water is typically warm and clear, with sunlight filtering down in shifting columns that illuminate the reef's color and texture. Depending on season and conditions, you may spot nurse sharks resting beneath ledges or spotted eagle rays sweeping past in open water. The reef lies near a lighthouse structure that serves as a navigational landmark visible from the surface. This is a working ecosystem — dynamic, fragile, and breathtaking in its density of life.
