Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory
One of South Korea's premier dark-sky observatories, set high in Sobaeksan National Park for rare naked-eye Milky Way views.
About this spectacle
Perched in the mountains of North Chungcheong Province, Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory offers visitors a rare chance to gaze into genuinely dark skies above one of South Korea's most protected highland areas. Away from the dense urban glow of Seoul and Daejeon, the observatory sits within Sobaeksan National Park, where the forested ridgelines frame a sweeping celestial canopy. On clear nights, the Milky Way becomes visible to the naked eye, a sight increasingly hard to find across the Korean peninsula. Visitors can peer through telescopes at star clusters, planets, and nebulae, guided by observatory staff. The mountain air carries a distinctive crispness, especially in autumn and winter, when atmospheric clarity is at its best. The surrounding landscape — quiet trails, dense pine forests, and the occasional rustle of wildlife — adds texture to the experience even before darkness falls. It is a contemplative, unhurried encounter with the night sky.
