A roadside series of rushing waterfalls and emerald swimming holes in western Maine, free to visit and spectacular in any season.
About this spectacle
Smalls Falls is a series of cascading waterfalls along the Sandy River in western Maine, where clear mountain water tumbles over rust-colored bedrock through a narrow gorge. Visitors walk a short trail from a roadside pullout to reach a sequence of drops and emerald-green plunge pools that invite wading on warm days. The sound of rushing water fills the air year-round, but the spectacle is most dramatic in late spring when snowmelt swells the flow to a roaring torrent. In summer the pools calm enough for swimming, and the surrounding hemlock and hardwood forest provides shade and dappled light for photography. Autumn brings vivid foliage that frames the falls in amber and crimson. The site is free to access and close to Route 4, making it one of the most visited natural swimming holes in Maine.
