Sleeping Giant Thunder Bay
A colossal mesa peninsula on Lake Superior whose ridgeline forms the unmistakable silhouette of a sleeping giant — one of Canada's most iconic natural vistas.
About this spectacle
Rising dramatically from the cold waters of Lake Superior near Thunder Bay, Ontario, the Sleeping Giant is a massive mesa and peninsula whose ridgeline silhouette unmistakably resembles a reclining giant figure. Visitors hiking the trails of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park encounter sweeping panoramas of Lake Superior — the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area — stretching to the horizon in all directions. The surrounding boreal forest blazes with colour in autumn, while spring and summer bring wildflowers and nesting birds. From the South Sibley Lake lookout or the summit of the Thunder Bay Lookout, the scale of the landform becomes breathtaking: sheer dolerite cliffs plunge hundreds of metres toward island-dotted waters. The crisp northern air carries the scent of spruce and pine, and on calm days the lake surface mirrors the giant's profile perfectly. Wildlife including moose, wolves, and a diverse array of raptors inhabit the park.
