Skakavac Waterfall — Bosnia and Herzegovina
A dramatic waterfall thundering into a deep forested gorge near Sarajevo — one of Bosnia's most striking natural plunges.
About this spectacle
Skakavac Waterfall plunges dramatically into a forested gorge near Sarajevo, its white curtain of water thundering against mossy rock faces that amplify the sound into a deep, reverberating roar. Visitors wind through dense Bosnian forest along a trail that grows steeper as the falls come into earshot before they come into view. The spray creates a cool microclimate even in summer, coating nearby rocks and vegetation in vivid green moss. Standing at the base, the scale of the drop becomes fully apparent — the cliff face towers overhead, water catching the filtered forest light. The surrounding canyon walls frame the sky in a narrow ribbon, lending the spot an enclosed, almost intimate drama. In spring, snowmelt pushes the flow to its most powerful, and in winter ice formations sometimes cling to the rock edges, adding a sculptural quality to the scene.
