Shiraito Falls — Japan
A 150-metre-wide curtain of gossamer streams fed by Mount Fuji's groundwater — one of Japan's most distinctively delicate waterfalls.
About this spectacle
Shiraito Falls in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, unfolds as a delicate curtain of water — not a single thundering plunge, but hundreds of thin streams seeping through a curved volcanic rock face roughly 150 meters wide, fed by snowmelt and groundwater from the flanks of Mount Fuji. Visitors stand on a viewing platform and watch the lace-like threads of water drop some 20 meters into a clear pool below, all against the backdrop of dense forest. The sound is a gentle, continuous hiss rather than a roar. In winter the streams partially freeze into glittering ice columns. The site sits within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and the falls are designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan. A short riverside walk leads to the main viewpoint, making the experience accessible and serene.
