Sharp-Tailed Grouse Lek — Manitoba Canada

The sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) lek on the Manitoba and Saskatchewan prairies from March through May — the males' rapid foot-stamping display on traditional lek grounds (the same sites used for decades, the grass worn smooth by generations of dancing feet), the purple air sacs inflated, the white under-tail fanned, and the rattling wing display producing an extraordinary percussive sound — creates one of Canada's finest prairie grouse dawns. The Delta Marsh and the Riding Mountain National Park produce accessible lek sites, and the combination of the sharp-tailed grouse's display (faster and more frenetic than the greater prairie chicken's display, the males' feet blurring in the early morning light), the prairie landscape's flat horizon, and the occasional northern harrier hunting overhead creates a complete Canadian prairie dawn of the highest quality.

About this spectacle

In the grey pre-dawn stillness of Manitoba's prairies, male sharp-tailed grouse converge on their ancestral lek grounds — patches of grass worn smooth by decades of dancing feet. As light begins to touch the flat horizon, the males launch into one of North America's most frenetic avian displays: feet blur in rapid-fire stamping, purple air sacs inflate and deflate at the throat, white under-tails fan wide, and rattling wings produce an extraordinary percussive clatter that carries across the open grassland. The frenzy peaks at first light, with males competing in tight clusters, rushing and posturing. Accessible sites near Riding Mountain National Park and Delta Marsh allow observers to witness this from low hides or vehicles, the prairie sky shifting from indigo to gold above the performers. Occasionally a northern harrier drifts silently overhead, adding drama to an already complete prairie dawn. The display runs from March through May, with April typically the peak.
