About this spectacle

Sermitsiaq is a dramatic peak rising above Nuuk, Greenland's capital, offering sweeping views over the fjord landscape and the Davis Strait. In the celestial realm, the site is best known for the northern lights that sweep overhead during the long polar nights of autumn through spring, dancing in curtains of green and occasionally purple across an ink-dark sky largely free from urban light pollution. The surrounding silence — broken only by wind and distant ice — makes watching the aurora here a profoundly atmospheric experience. In summer, the midnight sun transforms the mountain's silhouette into a glowing landmark visible for miles, while stars and planets emerge in the brief astronomical twilight of the shoulder seasons. The raw sub-Arctic landscape adds immense visual drama to any celestial display, framing the sky with jagged ridgelines and the silver sheen of the fjord below.
