About this spectacle

Seongsan Ilchulbong, known as 'Sunrise Peak', is a dramatic tuff cone that erupts from the sea on the eastern tip of Jeju Island. At dawn, visitors climb a broad stone stairway through lush crater rim vegetation to watch the sun rise over the Pacific horizon — a spectacle that has drawn pilgrims and tourists alike for generations. The vast bowl-shaped crater below is carpeted in green, contrasting with the dark volcanic rock of the rim. Sea mist often drifts across the cliffs, and the surrounding waters reveal haenyeo (female divers) at work in the shallows. The viewing platform at the summit offers a 360-degree panorama stretching across the coast of Jeju and the open ocean. Seabirds wheel around the cliffs as the light shifts from deep orange to gold. The combination of volcanic geology, ocean views, and atmospheric morning light makes each sunrise a unique and quietly thrilling encounter with Jeju's volcanic origins.
