Sedona Cathedral Rock
Sedona's most photographed sandstone spires glow fiery red at sunrise and sunset, with a perfect mirror reflection in Oak Creek below.
About this spectacle
Cathedral Rock is one of Sedona's most iconic sandstone formations, rising dramatically above the surrounding high desert. Visitors approaching from the creek crossing at Red Rock Crossing are greeted by the sight of the multi-spired red rock butte reflected in Oak Creek — a scene that stops nearly every passerby in their tracks. The warm iron-oxide hues of the Permian-age sandstone shift dramatically through the day, from soft peach at dawn to blazing orange at midday and deep crimson at dusk. Hikers on the Cathedral Rock Trail scramble up steep slickrock to reach saddle viewpoints where panoramic vistas of the Verde Valley open in every direction. The air carries the scent of juniper and desert sage. At sunset, the rocks glow as if lit from within, and photographers line up along the creek bank for that perfect reflection shot.
