Schleierfälle der Ammer
A wide, gossamer veil of water spilling over a limestone ledge on the Ammer River — Bavaria's most elegant curtain falls.
About this spectacle
The Schleierfälle der Ammer is a veil waterfall on the Ammer River in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps near Peiting, Germany. Visitors encounter a wide, gossamer curtain of water cascading over a limestone ledge, spreading into a broad, shimmering sheet that gives the falls their name — 'Schleier' meaning veil. The surrounding landscape is lush with alpine meadows and mixed forest, filling the air with the constant rush of tumbling water and the scent of pine and damp rock. The falls are most dramatic in late spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the Ammer, turning the veil into a powerful roar of white water. In summer the flow gentles into a translucent, photogenic curtain. The valley walls and gorge setting create a naturally framed spectacle accessible to walkers of most abilities, making it a popular yet rewarding half-day outing from nearby towns.
