Schiermonnikoog East Beach
One of Western Europe's most pristine and isolated beaches, where endless tidal flats, dune ridges, and North Sea skies converge in raw coastal splendour.
About this spectacle
Schiermonnikoog's east beach stretches into one of the most remote and undeveloped coastal landscapes in the Netherlands. As the island's eastern tip, it forms part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage area, where vast tidal flats, windswept dunes, and shell-strewn sands meet the open North Sea. Visitors walk through a landscape of shifting light and expansive skies, where the sound of wind and surf dominates and human structures are entirely absent. The beach narrows and widens with each tide, revealing sandbars and pools teeming with wading birds. On clear days the horizon stretches unbroken, and winter storms roll in dramatically from the north. The scale of open space creates a powerful sense of solitude rare in Western Europe. Migratory birds concentrate here in spring and autumn, adding movement and sound to the wide silence.
