Saut du Doubs
A 27-metre waterfall on the Franco-Swiss border, best approached by boat across a forest lake, spectacular in both flood and winter ice.
About this spectacle
The Saut du Doubs is a dramatic waterfall on the Franco-Swiss border, where the Doubs River plunges approximately 27 metres into a narrow gorge surrounded by dense conifer forest. Visitors approach along forested paths or by boat across the Lac des Brenets, arriving at a viewpoint where mist rises from the churning basin below. The sound is impressive — a constant, deep roar that fills the gorge — and in high water the falls spread into an impressive curtain of white water. In winter the falls can partially freeze, creating striking columns of ice against the dark rock. The surrounding forest takes on golden tones in autumn, making it a favourite destination for landscape photographers. The site sits within a tranquil valley landscape on the edge of the Doubs River valley, with the Swiss side equally accessible.
