Salto del Nervión
Spain's tallest waterfall leaps off a sheer limestone cliff, dissolving into mist before it hits the ground — a vertiginous spectacle above the Basque countryside.
About this spectacle
Salto del Nervión is a dramatic waterfall in the Basque Country of northern Spain, where the Nervión River plunges off the edge of the Monte Santiago massif. On calm days the water disperses into a fine mist before reaching the bottom, creating a ghostly veil rather than a solid cascade — a phenomenon that intensifies when strong winds blow the spray sideways across the cliff face. The surrounding landscape is rugged limestone karst, with panoramic views across the Cantabrian foothills. Visitors hike to the clifftop viewpoint to peer down into the abyss, or approach from the valley below to look upward at the full height of the fall. The sound alone — a distant roar echoing off the rock walls — builds anticipation long before the waterfall comes into view. Autumn and spring tend to bring the highest water flow, while summer visits may find a reduced trickle.
