Sage Grouse Lek — Wyoming USA

The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) lek near Pinedale and Lander in Wyoming is North America's finest prairie grouse display — males gathering at traditional display grounds from late February through May before dawn to perform the most elaborately visual display of any North American bird: erecting spiky tail feathers, inflating two olive-green air sacs that produce resonant 'plop' and 'swoosh' sounds, and striding across the lek arena in slow, deliberate circles. Wyoming's open sagebrush landscape, visible in every direction from the lek's flat ground, provides the display its natural context, and the combination of up to 60 males displaying simultaneously in the first grey of dawn, the air sac sounds audible 300 metres away, and the females' calm selection walk through the arena creates one of North America's most powerful and least-known wildlife dawn experiences.

About this spectacle

In the predawn darkness of late winter and spring, the sagebrush flats near Pinedale and Lander come alive with one of North America's most theatrical wildlife displays. Greater sage-grouse males arrive at their traditional lek grounds — flat, open arenas surrounded by Wyoming's endless sagebrush sea — before first light. Up to 60 males display simultaneously, erecting spiky tail fans into starburst crowns, puffing their chests forward, and rhythmically inflating twin olive-green air sacs that emit deep resonant 'plop' and 'swoosh' sounds audible 300 metres away. The birds pace in slow, deliberate circles as females walk calmly through the arena, evaluating suitors. The display reaches its height in the first grey of dawn — silhouettes resolving slowly into full colour as light builds across the open sage plain visible in every direction. The cold, the quiet, the surreal acoustic percussion, and the sheer number of males all contributing at once make this a spectacle that rewards any effort to reach it.
