About this spectacle

Saana Fell is a distinctive table-topped mountain rising above the village of Kilpisjärvi in Finland's northwestern corner, within the Arctic Circle. During the polar night from late November to mid-January, the sky above Saana offers deep, unobstructed darkness ideal for witnessing the aurora borealis dancing in ribbons and curtains of green, pink, and violet. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the bare quartzite summit and surrounding tundra in a warm, never-setting golden light — a disorienting and magical phenomenon. The silence of the subarctic fell landscape amplifies the spectacle: no city lights, no noise, just the vast sweep of sky above treeless terrain and the frozen expanse of Lake Kilpisjärvi below. Temperatures can drop severely in winter, and the wind on the exposed summit intensifies the chill.
