Ruta del Cares gorge

About this spectacle

The Ruta del Cares cuts through one of Europe's most dramatic limestone gorges in the Picos de Europa, following the River Cares as it carves a narrow channel hundreds of metres below the trail. Walkers edge along a path blasted from sheer cliff faces, peering down into a roaring turquoise river far below while the canyon walls rise steeply on both sides. The sound of rushing water echoes off rock, eagles circle overhead, and wildflowers cling to impossible ledges. The route passes through short tunnels and over stone bridges, delivering constantly changing perspectives of the gorge. Chamois may be spotted picking their way across the limestone crags, and griffon vultures ride thermals above. The interplay of water, rock, and sky makes this one of the Iberian Peninsula's most spectacular walking experiences.
