Rusumo Falls — Tanzania
A powerful, roaring cascade on the Tanzania-Rwanda border where the Kagera River surges through a narrow rocky gorge.
About this spectacle
Rusumo Falls marks the border between Tanzania and Rwanda on the Kagera River, where the river narrows dramatically and crashes through a rocky gorge in a powerful, churning cascade. Visitors standing on or near the old colonial bridge feel the spray and hear the deep roar of the water as it surges between rust-red boulders. The surrounding landscape is lush and tropical, with dense green vegetation clinging to the riverbanks. The falls are relatively compact but forceful, creating a constant mist that catches the light. The crossing is historically significant as a transit point during regional conflicts, lending the site a layered, sobering atmosphere alongside its natural drama. Wildlife including birds and monitor lizards may be spotted along the banks. The falls are accessible by road from Ngara and from the Rwandan side, making them a practical stop for cross-border travellers.
