About this spectacle

The Ruby Mountains rise dramatically from Nevada's high desert, offering a striking alpine landscape of glacier-carved cirques, jagged ridgelines, and high-elevation lakes. Lamoille Canyon, often called the 'Yosemite of Nevada,' cuts deep into the range, revealing exposed granite walls streaked with glacial polish. Visitors follow a scenic road past willows and aspens that blaze gold in autumn, with peaks soaring above 11,000 feet framing every view. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in summer, and the silence of the desert range amplifies the scale of the scenery. In winter, snow blankets the terrain and the mountains draw backcountry skiers and snowshoers. The sense of contrast — lush canyon carved into arid basin-and-range country — gives the Ruby Mountains a visual drama rare for the Great Basin.
