Roches Rouges of Esterel
Crimson volcanic cliffs cascade into the turquoise Mediterranean — the Estérel Massif's red rhyolite coastline is one of France's most visually dramatic geological landscapes.
About this spectacle
The Massif de l'Estérel on the French Riviera presents one of the Mediterranean coast's most vivid geological spectacles: steep cliffs and rocky outcrops of deep crimson and rust-red rhyolite plunging toward the turquoise waters of the Côte d'Azur. Walking the coastal paths, visitors are surrounded by a palette of burnt orange, burgundy, and violet rock faces scarred by ancient volcanic activity, contrasting sharply with the blue sea below and the green scrub of maritime pines and maquis. At dawn and dusk the reddish hues intensify dramatically, the low sunlight igniting the stone to a near-glowing red. The air carries the resinous scent of Mediterranean scrubland, and the only sounds are waves and cicadas. The scenery is visually arresting year-round, but the combination of deep blue winter sea and vivid red cliffs, or the golden summer light over the rugged coastline, makes every season rewarding.
