Red-Sided Garter Snake Mating Ball — Manitoba Canada

The red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) emergence at the Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba is one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles — up to 70,000 snakes emerging from their limestone sinkhole hibernacula in late April and May, the males forming writhing mating balls of 100+ individuals around each emerging female in a mass of reptilian activity covering the ground for hundreds of metres in every direction. The dens at Narcisse are the world's largest known concentration of any snake species, and the emergence's scale — the ground moving with snakes in every direction, the air warm with their collective body heat — is genuinely overwhelming. The snakes' complete indifference to human observers (they can be handled freely), the biological spectacle of 70,000 individuals concentrated in a few hectares, and the Manitoba spring landscape's contrast with the snakes' tropical appearance create one of North America's most biologically extraordinary accessible wildlife events.

About this spectacle

At the Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba's Interlake region, late April and May bring one of the planet's most astonishing concentrations of vertebrate life. Up to 70,000 red-sided garter snakes emerge from their limestone sinkhole hibernacula simultaneously, the ground rippling in every direction as far as the eye can see. Males coil into writhing mating balls of 100 or more individuals around each newly emerged female, the mass of bodies generating perceptible warmth. The snakes are completely habituated to human presence — visitors can crouch among them, feel the cool smoothness of scales against their hands, and observe courtship behaviour at centimetres' range. The contrast is arresting: a cold Manitoba spring morning, bare trees, and then a heaving carpet of vivid red-striped snakes covering hundreds of metres of terrain. The collective rustle and the faint musky scent of thousands of snakes fill the air. Nothing else in North America prepares you for this scale of reptilian activity — it is overwhelming, viscerally strange, and utterly unforgettable.
