Rachelsee
Glacial cirque lake under Großer Rachel in Bavarian Forest NP.
About this spectacle
Rachelsee is a small glacial cirque lake nestled beneath the summit of Großer Rachel in the Bavarian Forest National Park. Visitors arrive after a forest hike through dense spruce and fir woodland, emerging to find a still, dark-green lake cradled in a rocky bowl carved by ancient glaciers. The water reflects the surrounding ridgeline and sky with striking clarity on calm days. The atmosphere is quiet and remote, with the sounds of wind through conifers and occasional birdcall. In spring, snowmelt feeds the lake and surrounding vegetation bursts green; in autumn, the forested slopes glow in warm amber and orange. Winter brings a layer of ice and a hushed, monochrome landscape. The lake sits within a strictly protected zone of the national park, meaning the surrounding forest is left largely undisturbed, adding to the sense of wild solitude.
