Quechee Gorge
Vermont's deepest gorge drops 165 feet of ancient schist walls into the churning Ottauquechee River — a dramatic natural cut through classic New England forest.
About this spectacle
Quechee Gorge is Vermont's deepest gorge, carved by the Ottauquechee River through layers of ancient schist. Standing on the bridge above, visitors look down into a dramatic 165-foot chasm where the river churns below. The gorge walls are draped in hemlocks and hardwoods that blaze with color each autumn, making the view from the bridge a classic New England scene. A trail descends to the river's edge, where the sound of rushing water fills the cool, shaded canyon. In winter, ice formations coat the rock faces. The surrounding Quechee State Park adds forested trails along the gorge rim, offering multiple perspectives of this compact but striking geological feature.
