Punaluu Black Sand Beach
A stunning jet-black volcanic sand beach on Hawaii's Big Island, famous for basking Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on the dramatic dark shore.
About this spectacle
Punaluu Black Sand Beach on Hawaii's Big Island is one of the most visually striking coastlines in the United States. The jet-black sand, formed from rapidly cooled basaltic lava meeting the ocean, creates a dramatic contrast with the turquoise Pacific and lush tropical greenery. Waves crash against dark volcanic rock formations, filling the air with salt spray and the rhythmic boom of surf. The beach is perhaps best known as a regular resting spot for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), which haul out onto the black sand to bask in the sun. Visitors can observe these federally protected animals from a respectful distance. The surrounding landscape reflects the active volcanic heritage of the island, with steam vents and dark lava fields visible nearby. The combination of geological drama and accessible wildlife makes this one of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii.
