Pulvermaar
Best-preserved maar lake in the Eifel, near Gillenfeld.
About this spectacle
Pulvermaar is a strikingly circular volcanic crater lake nestled in the Eifel highlands of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Formed by a powerful phreatomagmatic eruption roughly 10,000 years ago, it is regarded as the best-preserved maar lake in the region. Visitors standing at the rim gaze down at water of extraordinary clarity and stillness, enclosed by gently wooded slopes that mirror the sky's colours across its glassy surface. In early morning, mist often drifts low over the water, lending the basin an otherworldly quiet. The surrounding beech and oak forest supports diverse birdlife, and dragonflies skim the shallows in summer. Autumn transforms the rim into a palette of amber and copper. Because the crater walls shield the lake from wind, the reflection on calm days is near-perfect — a photographer's gift. Access via the encircling footpath is straightforward, making this a rewarding half-day excursion from nearby Gillenfeld.
