About this spectacle

Along the blackwater channels and oxbow lakes of Danau Sentarum National Park in West Kalimantan, proboscis monkeys gather in the riverside trees as daylight fades. These striking primates — the males bearing their extraordinary pendulous noses — leap between branches overhanging the water, often crashing into the canopy in noisy groups. Visitors typically watch from boats drifting quietly along the river margins, listening to the deep honking calls that carry across the still water. At dawn and dusk the animals descend to lower branches close to the water's edge, sometimes launching themselves into the river in ungainly but effective swimming displays. The rich peat-swamp forest backdrop, with its reflections doubling the scene, creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Hornbills and kingfishers may share the same gallery of trees, adding layers of colour and sound to the experience.
