Praia das Catedrais
Colossal sea arches and caves carved into Galician cliffs, accessible only at low tide — a walk through a stone cathedral built by the Atlantic.
About this spectacle
At low tide, the Atlantic waves retreat to reveal a cathedral-like procession of towering rock arches and sea caves carved into the cliffs of Galicia's northern coast. Visitors walk along the exposed beach beneath soaring stone buttresses, some reaching over 30 metres high, with the sound of the sea echoing through hollowed passages. The sensation is of walking inside a vast natural basilica — the rock is stratiated in warm ochres and greys, draped with green algae at the waterline. Access is strictly governed by the tides: arrive too late and the sea reclaims the arches entirely. At golden hour during low tide in summer, the light angles deep into the caves, creating extraordinary photographic conditions. Outside peak season the beach is dramatically quieter, with mist and surf adding raw Atlantic atmosphere.
