Pöllat-Schlucht
A thundering limestone gorge beneath Neuschwanstein Castle, where the Pöllat stream carves through moss-draped canyon walls in the Bavarian Alps.
About this spectacle
Pöllat-Schlucht is a dramatic river gorge carved by the Pöllat stream in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps near Schwangau. Visitors descend into a narrow, moss-draped canyon where the water rushes and tumbles over polished limestone, filling the air with cool mist and a steady roar. Wooden walkways and railings guide the path alongside vertical rock walls that rise steeply overhead, filtering the light into shifting green and silver hues. In spring, snowmelt swells the stream to its most powerful, sending white torrents crashing through the gorge. Autumn brings golden reflections from beech and alder lining the rim. The gorge sits directly below Schloss Neuschwanstein, and brief views of the castle's towers may appear through gaps in the canopy above, adding an unexpected visual drama to an already striking natural corridor.
