About this spectacle

The Pliva Waterfall sits at the point where the Pliva River spills into the Vrbas River near Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visitors witness a wide curtain of water cascading over a travertine ledge, framed by lush riverside vegetation and the historic town of Jajce rising on the cliffs above. The roar of the falls fills the gorge, and fine mist drifts over the viewing area. The waterfall is unusual in that it flows through the heart of a town, making it accessible without significant hiking. The surrounding landscape offers layered views: the falls themselves, the confluence of two rivers, and medieval fortifications overhead. Autumn brings warm amber tones to the riverside trees, while spring snowmelt amplifies the flow dramatically. The scene rewards wide-angle photography and is best appreciated in the soft light of morning.
