Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall — United Kingdom
Wales's tallest waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr, plunges through a natural rock arch in a remote Berwyn Mountains valley — a dramatic cascade few travellers ever find.
About this spectacle
Pistyll Rhaeadr plunges roughly 73 metres in a single dramatic drop before threading through a natural arch carved from the rock face — making it the tallest waterfall in Wales and one of the highest single-drop falls in Britain. Visitors follow a short riverside path through the Berwyn Mountains foothills to reach the viewing area, where the sheer volume of white water crashing into the plunge pool creates a fine mist that hangs in the air and soaks the surrounding ferns and mosses. In spate after heavy rain the roar is visceral, and spray catches light in small rainbows near the base. Autumn brings bronze bracken framing the white cascade; winter can ice the surrounding cliffs into sculptural formations. A small teahouse near the trailhead serves walkers. The broader valley feels remote and quiet, with the sound of the falls audible long before the drop comes into view.
