Pine Marten Den Season — Scottish Highlands

The pine marten (Martes martes) den season in the Cairngorms' Caledonian pine forest from April through June — the female's cubs' first appearances at the den entrance (a hole in a hollow tree or rock crevice), the family group's dusk activity, and the adults' extraordinary agility (capable of descending tree trunks head-first at full speed, catching red squirrels in the canopy) creating one of Scotland's most sought and most recently recovered mammal encounters. The Cairngorms' pine marten population recovery (from near-extinction in England and Wales in the 1970s to 4,000+ in Scotland today) and the RSPB's Abernethy Forest reserve's artificial den box programme create the finest accessible pine marten encounters in Britain. The combination of the pine marten's extraordinary climbing agility, the marten's distinctive 'sweet' musk scent that lingers in the forest, and the Caledonian pine forest's ancient character creates Scotland's most complete elusive mammal encounter.

About this spectacle

From April through June, the ancient Caledonian pines of Abernethy Forest come alive at dusk with one of Britain's most captivating wildlife encounters. Female pine martens begin bringing their cubs to den entrances — hollows in veteran Scots pines or rock crevices — where visitors may watch the family group's first tentative explorations in the fading light. Adults move through the canopy with breathtaking speed and sureness, capable of descending trunks head-first and pursuing red squirrels at full sprint through the branches. A distinctive sweet musky scent drifts through the forest air, often announcing a marten's presence before it is seen. RSPB Abernethy's artificial den box programme has made these encounters more reliable than almost anywhere else in Britain. As the shadows deepen under the ancient pines, the russet-throated martens emerge in what feels like a genuine window into Scotland's recovering wildwood.
