Pig-Nosed Turtle Aggregation — Northern Territory Australia

The pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) — the world's only freshwater turtle with flippers rather than clawed feet, and the sole surviving member of its family — congregates in the rivers and billabongs of the Northern Territory's Daly River and Victoria River systems during the dry season (May–September) when water levels concentrate them in the best food areas. The pig-nosed turtle's extraordinary anatomy — a pig-like fleshy snout covering a cartilaginous nose, combined with the marine-turtle-style flippers and a leathery shell rather than the hard scute-covered shell of typical freshwater turtles — makes it the most unusual freshwater reptile in Australia. Boat surveys on the Daly River produce regular pig-nosed turtle sightings, and the combination of the river's population of freshwater sawfish, pig-nosed turtles, and saltwater crocodiles in a single stretch of clear dry-season water makes the Daly one of Australia's most ecologically extraordinary rivers.

About this spectacle

The Daly River in Australia's Northern Territory offers one of the continent's most biologically astonishing wildlife encounters. During the dry season, May through September, dropping water levels concentrate pig-nosed turtles — the world's sole surviving member of family Carettochelyidae — into accessible pools and stretches of clear water. From a boat, visitors scan the river surface for the turtle's distinctive fleshy, pig-like snout breaking the calm water, before the animal dips back beneath. The flippers, evolved convergently with marine turtles, make their movement through the water unlike any other freshwater reptile. The same boat survey may reveal a freshwater sawfish cruising the depths and a saltwater crocodile motionless on a bank — an assemblage that feels prehistoric and improbable in a single river reach. Morning light on the olive-coloured water, the calls of waterbirds, and the stillness of the dry season create a quiet, immersive experience unlike any standard wildlife tour.
