Pickles Reef — United States
A shallow, coral-rich patch reef in the Florida Keys offering vivid underwater scenery for snorkelers and divers of all levels.
About this spectacle
Pickles Reef is a shallow patch reef located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, sitting in the warm, clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Snorkelers and divers find themselves surrounded by intricate coral formations — brain corals, star corals, and sea fans swaying in the gentle current. The reef teems with colorful parrotfish, angelfish, and sergeant majors darting between elkhorn and staghorn coral structures. Visibility is often excellent, allowing sunlight to filter through the water column and illuminate the reef in vivid blues and greens. Turtles and rays are occasional visitors, adding to the sense of abundant marine life. The relatively shallow depths make it accessible to beginner snorkelers while still offering enough topographic complexity to interest experienced divers. The ambient sound underwater is punctuated by the crackling and clicking of healthy reef activity, and the sensation of floating above this living structure is both calming and visually stunning.
