Pfaffenstein
Table mountain in Saxon Switzerland NP riddled with rock gates and overhangs.
About this spectacle
Pfaffenstein is a dramatic sandstone table mountain rising above the forests of Saxon Switzerland National Park, its flat summit plateau reached by carved rock staircases and narrow passages through the sandstone. Visitors wind through natural rock gates, beneath overhanging cliffs, and past weathered pillars sculpted by millennia of erosion. At the top, panoramic views sweep across the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and into the Czech Bohemian Switzerland beyond. The summit hosts the famous Barbarine, a slender rock needle standing sentinel above the plateau. The sense of discovery is heightened by the labyrinthine boulder fields and cave-like alcoves at the cliff base, where ferns cling to damp stone and light filters through narrow slots. The surrounding beech and pine forest adds seasonal colour — fiery in autumn, vibrant green in spring — making every visit visually distinct.
