Perseid Meteor Shower — Brecon Beacons National Park
One of the UK's best meteor-watching spots: the Brecon Beacons' International Dark Sky Reserve delivers spectacular Perseid displays every August.
About this spectacle
Every August, the Brecon Beacons transforms into one of the UK's premier meteor-watching destinations. Designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve, the park's low light pollution allows the Perseid meteor shower to dazzle observers with dozens of shooting stars per hour at its peak. Visitors lie back on moorland hillsides, eyes adjusting to an ink-black sky thick with stars, as bright meteors streak silently overhead — occasionally leaving glowing trails that linger for seconds. The surrounding landscape of open heathland and rounded peaks provides unobstructed horizons, maximising the field of view. On clear August nights the Milky Way arches overhead as a backdrop. Warm layers are essential; even summer nights at elevation can be cold. The experience is simultaneously thrilling and meditative — a reminder of the vastness beyond the everyday.
