Pelican Feeding — Mykonos Old Harbour Greece
The resident pelican of Mykonos harbour — currently 'Petros III', successor to a line of pelicans whose first member was given to the island in 1954 — is the most famous individual wild animal in Greece, wandering the Little Venice waterfront and old harbour as a free-range resident of the town, sitting in restaurants, begging at fish stalls, and tolerating close human contact with complete equanimity. The pelican's morning fish begging circuit of the harbour's fishing boats is a daily event that draws both locals and visitors, and the combination of the white-washed Cycladic architecture, the Mediterranean morning light, and the improbably large white bird conducting its social affairs in the streets of one of the world's most visited Greek islands creates an encounter of enormous charm and accessibility. The pelican's descendants have created similar situations in at least three other Aegean islands.
About this spectacle
Each morning in Mykonos Old Harbour, a large white Dalmatian pelican named Petros III makes his rounds — waddling between the bobbing fishing boats, inserting himself at fish stalls, and occasionally settling at an outdoor table as if expecting service. He is utterly unbothered by cameras, children, or crowds, and the harbour obliges with some of the Mediterranean's most photogenic backdrops: whitewashed Cycladic walls, blue-painted doors, and the warm gold of early light on the Aegean. The encounter is disarmingly intimate — this is not a zoo exhibit or a scheduled feeding show, but a free-roaming bird going about his own business in the lanes and quayside of a living town. The sound of lapping water, the smell of fresh fish, and the absurd dignity of an enormous bird navigating café chairs makes it one of the most charming wildlife encounters in Europe. No special effort is required: simply be at the old harbour on a morning and wait.
