Palo Duro Canyon
The 'Grand Canyon of Texas' — a vast, vividly colored canyon carved into the flat Panhandle, offering trails, towering rock formations, and spectacular light.
About this spectacle
Palo Duro Canyon slices through the Texas Panhandle in a blaze of layered red, orange, and purple rock that stops first-time visitors in their tracks. Often called the 'Grand Canyon of Texas,' it drops roughly 800 feet from the flat High Plains into a dramatic labyrinth of hoodoos, buttes, and sculpted walls carved by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Hiking or cycling the canyon floor rewards visitors with close-up views of the Capitol Peak formation and the iconic Lighthouse rock spire. The light shifts constantly — sunrise paints the walls a deep rust, midday bleaches them to pale ochre, and golden hour transforms the whole canyon into a photographer's dream. Wind moves through the juniper and mesquite with a dry, resinous scent, and mule deer are frequently spotted along quieter trails. The scale and color intensity make it unlike anything else on the Southern Plains.
