About this spectacle

Ouzoud Falls plunges approximately 110 metres in a series of tiered cascades through red-rock gorges in the Atlas foothills of Morocco. Visitors stand on mist-soaked viewing terraces watching the water shatter into rainbow-lit spray at the base, where Barbary macaques—bold and habituated to people—scramble along the cliffs and beg for fruit. The surrounding oleander and olive trees frame the falls in green, and small traditional mills still dot the riverbank. Boat trips take visitors close enough to feel the full force of the falls, and the sound—a constant deep roar—fills the canyon. The light is most dramatic in mid-morning when the sun angles into the gorge and full rainbows arc across the mist.
