Orca Intentional Stranding — Punta Norte
Orca whales deliberately beach themselves on Patagonian shores to snatch sea lion pups — a hunting technique taught from mother to calf over generations.
About this spectacle
At Punta Norte, on the remote Valdes Peninsula coast of Patagonia, a small pod of orca whales performs one of nature's most audacious hunting spectacles. During the sea lion pupping season, the orcas swim into the shallows at speed and intentionally beach themselves — crashing through the surf to seize pups in the breaking waves before wriggling back into the sea. Each lunge is explosive, over in seconds, yet the buildup can be long: visitors scan the horizon and watch the colony nervously, waiting. The technique is not instinctive — it is learned, passed from mother to calf across generations, making each animal that executes it the product of a slow, deliberate education. The sounds of crashing surf, bellowing sea lions, and the sudden eruption of white water as a dark shape rockets ashore make this one of the most viscerally thrilling wildlife encounters on the planet.
