Returns Jan 2027 Orca Canyon Feeding Frenzy — Bremer Bay
Every summer, a deep submarine canyon off Bremer Bay draws the largest known aggregation of orcas in the Southern Hemisphere — pods of killer whales, sperm whales, pilot whales and dolphins converge on upwelling-rich waters in a sustained feeding event unlike anywhere else in Australia.
About this spectacle
Sixty kilometres offshore from the small town of Bremer Bay, a submerged canyon plunges into cold, nutrient-rich depths that fuel one of the ocean's most dramatic predator gatherings. Every austral summer, orcas arrive in numbers unmatched anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere — pods working the upwelling together, surfacing, tail-slapping and coordinating hunts across open swells. Alongside them, sperm whales log at the surface between dives, pilot whales cruise in tight schools, and dolphins weave through the chaos. The experience unfolds from a vessel pitching on the Southern Ocean, surrounded by blows, dorsal fins and the occasional aerial breach. The scale is overwhelming: multiple family groups visible simultaneously, their calls sometimes audible above the engine noise. Morning departures catch the feeding activity at its most intense, with low-angle light painting the swells gold and the animals silhouetted against clear southern skies. There is nothing like this spectacle elsewhere on the Australian coast.
