Oneonta Gorge
A narrow basalt slot canyon in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge where visitors wade through a cold stream between soaring moss-draped walls to reach a hidden waterfall.
About this spectacle
Oneonta Gorge is a narrow slot canyon carved through basalt in the Columbia River Gorge, where sheer moss-covered walls rise dramatically on either side of a cold, clear stream. Visitors wade through knee-to-waist-deep water along the canyon floor, squeezing between towering dark stone walls draped in thick ferns and emerald moss. The passage eventually opens to reveal a graceful waterfall tucked deep within the gorge. The air is cool and damp, the light diffuse and green-filtered, and the sense of enclosure is profound. A seasonal logjam near the entrance adds an element of scrambling adventure. The space feels primordial — a cathedral of stone and water that rewards those willing to get wet.
